HP Pavilion dm4-1165dx

HP Pavilion dm4-1165dx

Combining a solid feature set with great battery life and good media performance, this mainstream laptop should rank high on your list.

New Dell XPS L501x Review

New Dell XPS L501x Review
We've lamented the state of Windows laptops on numerous occasions; the formula is "tried and true", but that doesn't mean we like it. Put in reasonably fast components, give us sufficient memory and hard drive capacity…and then match this with a cheap (usually glossy) plastic case and the least expensive (again, glossy) LCD panel you can find. Acer (and sub-company Gateway) has truly perfected the art, with a keyboard that all three of our laptop reviewers dislike/loathe/vilify, but they're certainly not the only culprit. ASUS, Toshiba, Dell, HP, and many others use variations of the same basic pattern, and what we're left with is a matter of finding out who if anyone can make something that truly stands out from the crowd. LG A520 3D Laptop with NVIDIA GT540M

LG A520 3D Laptop with NVIDIA GT540M
Beside its numerous home-entertainment oriented products, Korean company LG Electronics also brought to this year's International CES a few portable computing systems, including here the LG A520, a 15.6-inch notebook that comes packed with the company Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) 3D technology.

If you're not exactly familiar with the FPR technology, we'll have to mention that its main purpose is to optimize the separation of images for the left and right eye, which are then filtered through the glasses, thus enabling a blur-free 3D experience. Read more...

Sony Ericsson aims higher in 2011

The first step that they've taken is to improve the Xperia Arc handset adding an impressive new camera as well as 32-point multitouch. Using a new type of sensor known as Exmor R and with improved placement of the light sensors on the device the Experia Arc will now be able to take pictures in low-light conditions with much improved image stability. As well as the reduced risk of blurred pictures the UI of the camera has also been tweaked to speed up the process of taking pictures.

Going from no multitouch on the previous arc to 32-point multi-touch on the new model will also see a significant improvement in performance. It would theoretically allow 32 digits to operate it simultaneously but its main purpose will be to provide more accurate gestures which should make for more accurate typing.

Although the X10 and X10 mini failed to impress the market Steve Walker from Sony Ericsson was keen to point out how they influenced the development of the new Arc;

"If we hadn't done what we did with the X10 and the X10 minis we wouldn't have been able to do what we've done here today"

The new arc is expected to be available within the next couple of months and "is just the first of many" that Sony Ericsson plans to release in the new year.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc: High level shooter – video

We’ve noted the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc on a couple of occasions recently and included it in our 5 of the best upcoming Android phones from CES 2011 and also wrote about some earlier teasers of the Xperia Arc.

Now Andrew Munchbach over on BGR, sourced from Android Central, has given us a closer look at the high-level camera performance of the slimline Xperia Arc and there’s also a video from Sony Ericsson that you can see below this story. The 8-megapixel camera includes a Sony sensor and f/2.4 aperture value, which makes it suitable for varying light conditions.

There is also an array of configurations available and the 720p video showing off the Xperia Arc camera improvements was also conveniently taken using another Arc. If you want to take a hands-on look at this impressive handset then check out an article by Sascha Segan over on PC World which also rated the camera highly.

Are you thinking of purchasing the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc and are the enhanced camera features part of that decision? Why not let us know by sending us your comments.

Toshiba Satellite A665-S6086

Toshiba Satellite A665-S6086
An awesome-sounding sound system and a gorgeous-looking 16-inch display make the Toshiba Satellite A665-S6086 ($804.99 list), available at Best Buy, a great entertainment laptop. It lacks the Blu-ray drive that the similarly configured and priced Toshiba Satellite A665-S6085 ($799.98 list, 4 stars) has; but it makes up for this loss with an extended-life battery that produces a much longer-lasting battery and a WiMax radio for high-speed wireless broadband.

Design

Acer Aspire One AOD 255-1203 Review

Acer Aspire One AOD 255-1203
Sometimes you have to wonder if Acer is even remotely concerned about profit margins, given how aggressively priced its laptops are. The Aspire One AOD255-1203 ($329.99 street), for instance, is the company’s latest netbook, which sports Intel’s newest dual-core Atom—the N550 (1.5GHz). Among the handful that have already been launched with this processor—the Asus EeePC 1015PEM ($370 street, 4 stars) and HP Mini 5103 ($650 direct, 4 stars)—the AOD255-1203 is undoubtedly the most inexpensive. But, you still get a full-size keyboard and over 7 hours of battery life.

Design
Less than an inch thick (10.2 by 7.5 by 0.8-inches), the AOD255 is Acer’s thinnest netbook available, and at 2.5 pounds, it’s the lightest too. More review

Acer Aspire AS 5742-7645 review

Acer Aspire AS 5742-7645
The Acer Aspire AS5742-7645 ($649.99 list), a Costco laptop, follows the basic script for successfully putting together a low-end mainstream laptop. It comes fitted with Intel’s Core i3 processor, which provides great bang for the buck, sitting at the bottom rung of Intel’s current mobile processor ladder. The CPU has a standard 4GB memory, coupled with integrated Intel graphics.

The only core component that comes as a surprise is the 500GB hard drive, which is bigger than the 320GB drives generally found in competing models, such as the Sony VAIO VPC-EB33FM/BJ ($629.99, 4.5 stars)- the current Editors’ Choice for the budget laptop category. The VAIO VPC-EB33FM/BJ, however, counts wireless HDMI and WiMAX broadband capabilities among its major attractions. These features are not found on the Aspire AS5742-7645. Still, if you can make due with a wired HDMI connection and 802.11n Wi-Fi, the Acer Aspire AS5742-7645 is something not to be overlooked. Reading...

HP dv7 Laptop with Intel’s Sandy Bridge Inside

Intel may be waiting patiently to do the official unveiling of their Sandy Bridge processors until CES 2011, but that’s not stopping the name from popping up pretty much everywhere. We first caught glimpse of the new chip in an HP dv6 that was being shown off in an electronics store in Singapore, where you could buy one if you really wanted to. Another HP laptop appeared in Micro Center’s catalogue, and one lucky individual decided that they didn’t want to wait. So, they bought it. And sure enough, Sandy Bridge is on board. Thankfully, photos were taken.

On the inside of the machine, you’ll find a second-generation Intel Core i7-2630QM Processor, clocked at 2GHz. With the Tubo Boost technology thrown in for good measure, it can be bumped up to 2.9GHz. You’ll also find 6GB of RAM inside, along with 1TB 5400RPM HDD. 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6570 GPU should help with the graphics. The display is a 1600 x 900 LED variation, measuring in at 17.3-inches. For a bit of icing on the cake, the buyer also managed to run a few benchmarking tests, of which the laptop managed to come in just under the standard quad-core desktop PCs running Intel’s Core i7.

As for the battery life, the lucky individual states that it’s a 9-cell version, and that he’s managed to get just under four hours of usage while running Hulu, and only Hulu. When he did normal web browsing, along with listening to some music, he managed to eek out four and a half hours. It’s not all good news, though. Micro Center has pulled the listing for the HP dv7, and it’s no longer for sale. However, that should change here pretty quickly.
